Summary
Immerse yourself in the local culture and truly savor the authentic rhythm of rural life as you connect with the community.
Background
This project is actively working for SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), organized with the Citizen’s Council of Anuradhapura this year. Anuradhapura, the first kingdom of Sri Lanka, emerged over 2,500 years ago and is located in the North Central Province. After flourishing for 1,200 years, the capital was relocated deeper into the country, but the region’s rich archaeological heritage remains. Today, most residents depend on paddy farming, though poverty and underdevelopment persist in many villages. In 1956, the government initiated a resettlement project in some areas, and the descendants of those original settlers—now spanning three generations—continue to live there. Despite this long history, the community still faces significant challenges, including limited access to basic facilities and ongoing poverty. While the first generation was primarily engaged in agriculture, the third generation is now seeking broader employment opportunities. Our partner organization is actively working to address these issues through initiatives focused on human rights, media literacy, youth awareness, and women’s empowerment.
Work
We will collaborate with families who rely on agriculture for their livelihood. As this is the planting season, we will join them in their preparations and work alongside them. After four days of agricultural work, we will visit a village youth group, members of the women’s group, and a local school.
During these visits, volunteers will share their stories about their lives, families, and countries, offering the locals an opportunity to learn about different cultures and perspectives. This exchange not only broadens horizons but also inspires the community to envision new possibilities for their lives.
Accommodation
During the homestay, you will stay with a welcoming host family. The house is located 600 meters from the main road, offering a peaceful and authentic experience. The host mother will prepare meals for you, ensuring a taste of local home-cooked cuisine.
The home is equipped with essential facilities, including electricity, purified drinking water, a shower, and toilet amenities. However, telecommunication is limited, with no internet or mobile data access, providing a perfect opportunity to disconnect and immerse yourself in the surroundings.
Laundry is done by hand, with clothes left to dry outdoors, and toilet paper can use here. It’s a simple yet comfortable environment that offers a unique glimpse into local living.
